   "question": "Can I take a petit taxi from Marrakech to Ourika?",
   "answer": "No. Petits taxis (the small beige cars) are licensed for the city only. To reach the valley you need a grand taxi, a rental car, a tour or a private driver. A petit taxi can take you to the grand taxi departure point."
  },
  {
   "question": "How long does the drive take?",
   "answer": "Count about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 from Marrakech to Setti Fatma, depending on traffic when leaving the city, weekend crowds near the end of the road and the stops you make. Tnine Ourika, at the entrance of the valley, is much closer."
  },
  {
   "question": "Is it easy to drive to the Ourika Valley yourself?",
   "answer": "The road is paved all the way to Setti Fatma and is not difficult, but it narrows and winds in the upper valley, passes through villages with pedestrians, animals and parked vans, and gets busy at weekends. Drive slowly, avoid driving back after dark if you are not used to Moroccan roads."
  },
  {
   "question": "Where do I park in Setti Fatma?",
   "answer": "There are attended car parks along the road at the entrance of the village and near the end of the road. An attendant watches the cars for a small fee paid in cash. On summer weekends spaces fill quickly, so arrive in the morning."
  },
  {
   "question": "Is the Ourika Valley safe to visit in summer?",
   "answer": "Yes, with common sense. The main risk is a flash flood after a thunderstorm upstream, mostly on July and August afternoons. Do not picnic or stay in the riverbed when the sky darkens over the mountains, and follow the advice of local guides and restaurant owners."
  },
  {
   "question": "Can I go from the Ourika Valley to Oukaïmeden in the same day?",
   "answer": "Yes. The road to Oukaïmeden branches off at Aghbalou and climbs to the plateau. Combining both in one day is possible with a vehicle and an early start, but it is a full day. In winter, check the road and snow conditions before setting off."

 "content_markdown": "The Ourika Valley is reached from Marrakech by the Route de l'Ourika, a paved road that runs about 30 km to Tnine Ourika at the entrance of the valley and ends at Setti Fatma, 60-65 km from the city. The drive to Setti Fatma takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30, depending on traffic and stops. There are five ways to make the trip: a shared grand taxi, which leaves from a rank on the south side of the medina once its six seats are full and is the cheapest option; the ALSA suburban bus, line 25, which only goes as far as Tnine Ourika; a [rental car](https://getaroundrentcar.com/); a private driver; and an organised tour, shared or private. From Marrakech Menara airport, Setti Fatma is about 70 km and about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 away, with no direct public transport. Grand taxis and parking are paid in cash, in dirhams.\n\nWe drive the Ourika road every day. This guide covers every option, including the grand taxis that local families use, with the tips our drivers give their own friends.\n\nTo see where everything is, open our [map of the Ourika Valley](https://ourika-valley.com/ourika-valley-map/).\n\n## How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley?\n\nThe valley road leaves Marrakech to the south-east, on the Route de l'Ourika, and crosses a flat plain of olive groves and new housing before reaching the foothills. At about 30 km you reach **Tnine Ourika**, the small town at the entrance of the valley, named after its Monday souk. The road then follows the Oued Ourika upstream, past earth and stone villages, orchards and roadside potters, to **Aghbalou**, where the road to Oukaïmeden branches off. It continues up the narrowing valley to **Setti Fatma**, at about 1,500 m, where the paved road ends, 60-65 km from Marrakech.\n\nCount about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 to Setti Fatma. Traffic when leaving Marrakech, weekend crowds near the end of the road and the stops you make (cooperatives, gardens, photo stops) make the difference.\n\n## From Marrakech airport (RAK)\n\nMarrakech Menara airport sits on the south-western edge of the city, so you do not need to cross the medina to reach the valley. By road it is about 70 km from the airport to Setti Fatma, a little more than from the city centre, and about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 depending on traffic. Tnine Ourika and the lodges of the lower valley are much closer, less than an hour away.\n\nYou have two realistic options on arrival:\n\n- **A taxi from the rank outside arrivals.** Agree the price and the exact destination (village or lodge name) before you load the bags, and have dirhams ready. Say \"Setti Fatma\" clearly if that is where you are going, since \"Ourika\" alone can mean Tnine Ourika.\n- **A [private transfer](https://ourika-valley.com/services/private-transport-ourika-valley/) booked in advance.** Your driver waits at arrivals with your name, and the price is known before you travel: 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17. It is the calmer choice after a long flight, with children, or when you are going straight to a guesthouse in the valley.\n\nThere is no direct public transport from the airport to the valley.\n\n## Can you take a grand taxi from Marrakech to Ourika?\n\nGrand taxis are the way most local people travel between Marrakech and the valley, and they are the cheapest way for independent travellers. Here is how they work.\n\n### Petit taxi or grand taxi?\n\nMarrakech has two kinds of taxis. **Petits taxis** are the small beige cars you hail in the street: they are licensed for the city only and cannot take you to the valley. **Grand taxis** are larger vehicles that run fixed routes between towns, either shared (you pay for a seat) or chartered (you pay for the whole car).\n\n### Where shared grand taxis for Ourika leave from\n\nShared grand taxis to the Ourika Valley leave from a grand taxi rank on the south side of the medina. Over the years this rank has moved, and travellers and guidebooks give different locations (the Bab Er Robb area and the Bab Ghmat side of the city are both mentioned). Rather than walking around looking for it, ask your riad or tell a petit taxi driver \"la station des grands taxis pour l'Ourika\". Every driver in Marrakech knows where it is on the day.\n\n### How a shared grand taxi works\n\n- Say where you are going: \"Ourika\" usually means Tnine Ourika or the valley in general, so say **\"Setti Fatma\"** clearly if that is your destination. Some taxis stop at Tnine Ourika; check before you get in.\n- The taxi leaves **when every seat is full**. Grand taxis carry six passengers, so on a quiet morning you may wait. Early mornings and weekends are busiest.\n- You pay **per seat**, in cash, in dirhams. Fares are fixed for each route; ask a local passenger what they pay and pay the same. Have small notes.\n- If you do not want to wait, or want more space, you can **buy the empty seats** or charter the whole car. Agree the price with the driver before leaving.\n- For the return, shared taxis wait at Setti Fatma and in Tnine Ourika. The last departures of the day can be hard to predict, so do not leave your return late.\n\n### Chartering a grand taxi for the day\n\nYou can also hire a grand taxi with its driver for the whole day, which is close to a private transfer. The price is negotiated with the driver. Agree clearly on the destination, the waiting time and the return time before you leave, and pay at the end. Keep in mind that grand taxi drivers are transport professionals, not guides, and that the vehicles are often older and less comfortable than a tourist minivan.\n\n## Is there a bus from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley?\n\nYes, but only to the lower valley. The ALSA city network runs a suburban line, numbered 25, between the Sidi Mimoun area, on the edge of the medina near the Koutoubia (travellers also reported the grand taxis for Ourika leaving from this area in 2024), and Tnine Ourika at the entrance of the valley. It does not go up to Setti Fatma. From Tnine Ourika, shared taxis and minibuses cover the rest of the road, filling up as they go.\n\nWe do not quote fares or timetables here: we could not find a recent, reliable published schedule, and departures are irregular. Check the line number and the stop with your riad or the ALSA office before relying on it. For most visitors, the shared grand taxi described above is simpler, and it goes all the way to Setti Fatma. The bus makes the most sense on a Monday, when you can stop at the souk in Tnine Ourika.\n\n## Rental car\n\nA rental car gives you full freedom, and the road to Setti Fatma is paved all the way. A few points to know:\n\n- **Leaving Marrakech** is the most stressful part: roundabouts, scooters and horse carts. Once in the valley, traffic is lighter on weekdays.\n- **The upper valley road is narrow and winding**, with villages where children, donkeys and parked vans share the road. Drive slowly and use your horn gently on blind bends.\n- **Police checkpoints** are common on roads out of Marrakech. Keep your licence, rental papers and passport handy.\n- **Avoid driving back after dark** if you are not used to Moroccan roads: unlit vehicles and pedestrians are hard to see.\n\n### Parking at Setti Fatma\n\nSetti Fatma has attended car parks along the road at the entrance of the village and near the end of the road. An attendant in a vest watches the cars and collects a small fee in cash. On summer weekends and public holidays, when families come up from Marrakech to the river, the car parks fill and the last kilometres slow down. Arrive in the morning, or visit on a weekday.\n\n## Organised tour\n\nAn organised tour takes care of everything: transport, a driver who knows the road, stops on the way and usually a local guide for the walk to the falls. Our [Ourika Valley day trip](https://ourika-valley.com/day-trip-ourika-valley/) is private (your group only), with pickup at your hotel or riad and one price per vehicle: 120 EUR for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17. Lunch (20 EUR per person) and a local guide for the waterfalls (40 or 80 EUR per group) are options. If you want to share with other travellers to lower the cost, our [shared excursion](https://ourika-valley.com/services/shared-transport-ourika-valley/) costs 25 EUR per person, lunch and return transport from Marrakech included.\n\n## Private driver\n\nA [private transfer](https://ourika-valley.com/services/private-transport-ourika-valley/) is transport only, without a guide: a car or minivan with driver from your hotel, riad or the airport to any point of the valley with the driver waiting. It suits families, travellers going to a lodge, and anyone who wants to decide their own timing. Unlike a chartered grand taxi, the price is fixed and published: 100 EUR one way from Marrakech, 120 EUR one way from the airport, 120 EUR for a same-day return with the driver waiting, per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17, paid online.\n\n## Which way of getting there suits you best?\n\n| Option | Flexibility | Budget level | Best for |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Shared grand taxi | Low (leaves when full) | Lowest | Independent travellers, backpackers |\n| Chartered grand taxi | Medium | Low to medium | Small groups who can negotiate |\n| Rental car | High | Medium | Confident drivers, multi-day trips |\n| Our shared excursion (25 EUR, lunch included) | Low (fixed schedule) | Low | Solo travellers and couples |\n| Private day trip (guide optional) | Medium to high | Medium, cheaper per person in groups | Families, first visit, groups |\n| Private driver (from 100 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17) | High | Medium, cheaper per person in groups | Lodges, airport transfers, custom days |\n\n### Our shared excursion or our private day trip?\n\n| | Shared excursion | Private day trip |\n|---|---|---|\n| Price | 25 EUR per person, whatever your group size | 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17 people (60 EUR each for two, 30 EUR each for four, about 17 EUR each for seven) |\n| Lunch | Included | Optional, 20 EUR per person at a riverside restaurant |\n| Pickup | Fixed meeting point in Marrakech | Your hotel or riad (nearest vehicle access in the medina) |\n| Schedule | Fixed | Your pace |\n| Travel companions | Other travellers | Your group only |\n| Local guide for the waterfalls | Ask us | Optional, 40 EUR per group (1 to 7 people) or 80 EUR (8 to 17 people) |\n| Payment | Online | Online |\n\nFor one to three people the shared excursion is clearly cheaper, and lunch is already paid: a couple pays 50 EUR on the shared trip, lunch and transport included, against 120 EUR for the private vehicle before options (200 EUR with the guide and two lunches). From five or six people the private vehicle alone comes to 20 to 24 EUR each, close to the shared seat, but lunch is extra; in exchange you get your own vehicle, pickup at your door and a day at your rhythm. What you give up with the shared option is flexibility; what you gain is price and simplicity.\n\n## From Imlil to Setti Fatma\n\nImlil and Setti Fatma are both at the end of a mountain road, in neighbouring valleys, but there is no direct road between them. By car you go back down from Imlil to Asni, follow the main road towards Tahanaout, then take the Tahanaout to Ourika road across to the valley road and drive up to Setti Fatma. That is about 75 km, roughly 1 hour 30 to 2 hours with mountain traffic. Grand taxis can do it as a charter; shared taxis would mean changing in Asni or Tahanaout and Tnine Ourika. We can also arrange it as a [private transfer](https://ourika-valley.com/services/private-transport-ourika-valley/).\n\nOn foot, the two villages are linked by a classic trek over the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (about 2,270 m) and then a much higher pass above 3,000 m, usually done in two to three days with nights in gîtes or village houses and a mountain guide. It is a beautiful route, but it is a trek, not a day trip from Marrakech. We explain the differences between the valleys in [Ourika, Ouzoud or Imlil](https://ourika-valley.com/ourika-ouzoud-or-imlil/).\n\n## Getting to Oukaïmeden from Aghbalou\n\nAt Aghbalou a road branches off the valley road and climbs through the mountains to the Oukaïmeden plateau, at about 2,600 m, one of the highest ski areas in Africa. The total distance from Marrakech is about 70-75 km. The road is paved but steep and winding, with hairpin bends and few places to stop. In winter, snow and ice can make it difficult, and after heavy snowfall it may be closed for a while; ask locally before going up. Public transport up to the plateau is limited, so a car, a driver or a tour is the realistic way. Our [packages](https://ourika-valley.com/packages/) include an Ourika and Oukaïmeden day, at 180 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 260 EUR for 8 to 17.\n\n## Safety tips for the valley\n\n- **Flash floods.** The valley still remembers the [flood of 17 August 1995](https://ourika-valley.com/ourika-valley-history/). Summer thunderstorms can raise the river within minutes, mostly on July and August afternoons. If the sky darkens over the mountains, leave the riverbed and the riverside terraces and move to higher ground. Our page on the [weather in the Ourika Valley](https://ourika-valley.com/services/weather-ourika-valley/) explains the seasons.\n- **Mountain roads.** Keep to the speed of local traffic, not faster; watch for falling stones after rain.\n- **The walk to the falls.** The path to the [Setti Fatma waterfalls](https://ourika-valley.com/services/conquer-the-cascades-of-setti-fatma/) is rocky with some scrambling. Wear shoes with a good grip and consider a local guide.\n- **Cash.** Carry dirhams for taxis, parking, lunch and guides.\n\nIf you are not sure which option suits you, send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp (+212 755 700 484) or at booking@ourika-valley.com and we will give you an honest recommendation, even if it is the grand taxi.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [OpenStreetMap wiki, Marrakech public transport (ALSA line 25 Sidi Mimoun to Ourika, mapped and checked in 2024)](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FR:Marrakech)\n- [Routard forum, Marrakech to Ourika Valley transport (grand taxi from Sidi Mimoun, 2024)](https://www.routard.com/forums/t/transport-marrakech-vallee-de-l-ourika/422606)\n- [Rediscover Morocco, Imlil to Setti Fadma trek (Tizi n'Tamatert 2,272 m)](https://rediscover.co.uk/activity/trek-imlil-setti-fadma)\n- [OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), road distances from the airport and from Imlil, measured October 2026](https://map.project-osrm.org/)"
