  • Private vehicle and driver for your group only
  • From 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17
  • Women's argan oil cooperative on the way
  • Pickup and drop-off at your hotel or riad
  • Optional riverside lunch, 20 EUR per person
  • Optional local guide for the waterfalls walk, 40 or 80 EUR per group

The day, stop by stop

  1. Pickup at your hotel or riad

Your driver collects you in the morning at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. If you stay inside the medina, we meet you at the nearest point a vehicle can reach, as close as possible to your door. The exact pickup time is confirmed after booking, and your driver sends you a WhatsApp message the day before so you know who to look for.

  2. The road into the High Atlas

We leave the city by the road south and cross the flat Haouz plain towards the mountains. After about 30 km you reach Tnine Ourika, the small town at the entrance of the valley, named after its Monday souk. From there the road follows the river, past villages of earth and stone perched on the slopes, terraced fields and orchards of walnut, apple and olive trees.

  3. Women's argan oil cooperative

We stop at a cooperative run by women, where you see every step of making argan oil: cracking the nuts between two stones, roasting the kernels for culinary oil, grinding them on a stone mill and kneading the paste. The argan trees themselves grow in the south-west of Morocco; the valley cooperatives work with kernels brought from there. You taste the oil with bread, and buying is never required.

  4. Optional stop on the way

If you wish, we add a short stop along the road: a pottery workshop where tagine pots are shaped and fired, a Berber house for a glass of mint tea, or a camel ride. Tell us when you book or simply ask your driver on the day. The camel ride is paid on the spot and anything you buy at a workshop is up to you.

  5. Setti Fatma, at the end of the road

The road ends at Setti Fatma, the last village of the valley, at about 1,500 m. Cafés and small restaurants line the river, with footbridges and tables set almost in the water. If you added the guide option when you booked, this is where you meet your local guide from the valley, who knows the path, the weather and the families who live along it, and who explains the Amazigh (Berber) culture of the villages.

  6. Walk to the waterfalls

From the village you walk up the gorge towards the waterfalls, with your guide if you booked one. There are seven falls in the gorge; most visitors reach the first ones, which already make a fine goal. Allow about two hours in total. The path is rocky, with some scrambling over boulders, so good shoes matter more than fitness. A guide adapts the route to your group; on your own, we advise stopping at the first falls.

  7. Lunch by the river and return

Back in the village, it is time to eat on the banks of the Oued Ourika. If you added the lunch option, it is served at a riverside restaurant: tagines, Moroccan salads and seasonal fruit, often at a table a few steps from the water. If you prefer to eat on your own, you choose a restaurant and pay it directly. In the afternoon your driver takes you back to Marrakech and drops you at your hotel or riad in the late afternoon.

The private Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech is a full day in a private vehicle with a driver who speaks French, English and Spanish. Pickup is in the morning at a hotel or riad and the return is in the late afternoon; the exact time is confirmed after booking. The route follows the valley road to Setti Fatma, about 60-65 km from Marrakech, with a stop at a women's argan oil cooperative and time for the walk to the waterfalls. The price is per vehicle, not per person: 120 EUR for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17. Riverside lunch (20 EUR per person) and a local guide for the waterfalls (40 EUR per group for 1 to 7 people, 80 EUR for 8 to 17) are options chosen at booking. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the trip. Booking is online, paid with PayPal or by card via PayPal, with instant email confirmation.

Leave the momentum of the Red City behind for a day. In the foothills of the High Atlas the air is cooler, the river is loud, and the villages still run on the rhythm of farming and the weekly souk. This is the trip we run most often, and we built it the way we would show the valley to our own friends.

Why this trip

The Ourika Valley is the closest mountain escape from Marrakech, about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 to Setti Fatma, depending on traffic and stops. That short distance is its great strength: you spend the day in the valley, not in a car. In a single day you see how Amazigh (Berber) families live, farm and build, you learn how argan oil is made, you walk up a real mountain gorge to the waterfalls, and you sit down to lunch with your feet almost in the river.

It is also a cultural day, not only a scenic one. The local guide you can add when you book is from the valley and happy to explain Tamazight culture and what you are looking at: why the houses are built of earth, how the irrigation canals share water between families, what the women at the cooperative are doing with their stones. Ask anything. The best conversations of the day often happen on the walk.

Private or shared?

The tour you book on this page is private: the vehicle and the driver are for your group only, and you set the pace at every stop. You pay one price per vehicle, from 120 EUR for 1 to 7 people, and add lunch or a local guide if you want them. Our private transfer costs the same per vehicle (120 EUR for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17) but is transport only: the day trip adds the programme, with the cooperative stop, and the lunch and guide options. Travelling alone or as a couple on a tight budget, you may prefer our shared excursion at 25 EUR per person with lunch included. Short on time? Our Ourika half day leaves at 7:00 am and is back in Marrakech around noon, at the same vehicle price, with breakfast by the river as an option in place of lunch. The side-by-side comparison of both options is in our guide to getting to the Ourika Valley.

The route, stop by stop

Your driver picks you up in the morning at your hotel or riad. From Marrakech the road crosses the plain for about thirty kilometres to Tnine Ourika, where the valley begins. Then it follows the Oued Ourika upstream, past clay and stone houses clinging to the slopes and terraced fields watered by seguias.

On the way we stop at a women's argan oil cooperative, where you see the whole process of producing the "liquid gold" of Morocco, from cracking the nuts to pressing the oil. One detail most visitors do not know: argan trees do not grow in Ourika. They grow in the south-west of the country, around Essaouira and Agadir, and the valley cooperatives process kernels brought from there. The work you see, cracking and grinding by hand, is the same.

If you like, we add a short stop at a pottery workshop, a Berber house for mint tea, or a camel ride. Then the road climbs to Setti Fatma, the last village, at about 1,500 m, where your local guide joins you if you booked one.

The walk to the waterfalls

From the village you walk up the gorge to the first of the seven waterfalls of Setti Fatma, about two hours in total with stops. The path is rocky and wet in places, with a few spots where you use your hands, so good shoes matter more than fitness. The local guide is an option (40 EUR per group for 1 to 7 people, 80 EUR for 8 to 17): he knows the path and the river, and sets the pace for the slowest walker. Anyone who prefers not to walk can wait at a café by the river.

Lunch by the river

After the walk, lunch is at a restaurant right on the banks of the Oued Ourika. Some tables stand on platforms over the water, others in the shade of the terraces. The menu is simple and good: slow-cooked tagines, Moroccan salads, bread and seasonal fruit. Lunch is an option at 20 EUR per person, chosen and paid when you book, so the only bill left on the day is for your drinks. If you would rather choose for yourself, leave the option out, pick a restaurant on the day and pay it directly; ask for the menu and prices before ordering, as anywhere.

What should you bring?

  • Closed shoes with good grip (the single most important item)
  • A light jacket or sweater: the valley is cooler than Marrakech, especially in the morning
  • Sun cream, a hat and a bottle of water
  • Cash in dirhams for drinks, tips and small purchases (and for lunch if you did not add the lunch option)
  • A small bag for your phone and camera near the water
  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees, appreciated in the villages

Please ask before photographing people, especially women and children. Most people are happy to say yes when asked with a smile.

When is the best time of year to go?

The valley is pleasant most of the year. Spring (March to May) is our favourite: the orchards are green, and the waterfalls usually carry more water from the melting snow. Summer is popular because the valley is cooler than Marrakech, but afternoon thunderstorms can build over the mountains and the river can rise very quickly. Our drivers and guides watch the sky and the water closely, and if conditions become unsafe we propose another date or a full refund. Autumn is calm and golden, and winter is fresh and quiet, sometimes with snow on the peaks, so bring warm layers. Our weather guide has the details month by month.

How much does a private day trip to the Ourika Valley cost?

The tour is private and priced per vehicle, not per person: 120 EUR for a minivan for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for a minibus for 8 to 17 people. That price covers the vehicle, fuel, the driver (French, English, Spanish) and pickup and drop-off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech, for the whole day. The more seats you fill, the less each traveller pays: 60 EUR each for two, 30 EUR each for four, about 17 EUR each for seven; in a minibus, 25 EUR each for eight and about 12 EUR each for seventeen.

Two options can be added when you book. Lunch at a riverside restaurant costs 20 EUR per person. A local guide for the waterfalls walk costs 40 EUR per group for 1 to 7 people, and 80 EUR per group for 8 to 17 people. An example: a couple taking the vehicle, the guide and two lunches pays 120 + 40 + 40 = 200 EUR; eight people in a minibus with the guide and lunch pay 200 + 80 + 160 = 440 EUR, or 55 EUR each. Drinks, tips, the optional camel ride and your purchases are paid on the spot, only if you want them. We book up to 17 people online; for a larger group, write to us.

You pay online when you book, through PayPal with a PayPal account or a bank card, and you receive your confirmation email straight away. The day before, your driver contacts you on WhatsApp to confirm the pickup. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the trip, as explained in our terms and conditions. If you are comparing with a marketplace listing, read why we recommend booking direct and not on GetYourGuide or Viator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the shared and the private tour?

On the private tour the vehicle and driver are for your group only and you set the pace: 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, with lunch and a local guide as options. On the shared excursion you join other travellers on a fixed schedule from a meeting point in Marrakech, for 25 EUR per person with lunch and return transport included. For one to three people the shared option is clearly cheaper.

Is the day trip suitable for children?

Yes. Children usually love the river and the cooperative. The waterfalls walk is rocky, so young children often stop at the first falls, which is perfectly fine. With children we recommend adding the local guide, who adapts the route to them. Tell us the ages of your children when you book so we can plan the day around them.

How much does the private day trip cost?

The price is per vehicle, not per person: 120 EUR for a minivan for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for a minibus for 8 to 17 people. It covers the vehicle, fuel, the driver and pickup and drop-off at your hotel or riad. Four people pay 30 EUR each. We book up to 17 people online; for a larger group, contact us before booking.

How much does lunch cost?

Lunch is an option you add when you book: 20 EUR per person, at a riverside restaurant in Setti Fatma. Drinks are not included. You can also leave the option out and eat on your own: you then choose a restaurant, ask to see the menu and prices before ordering, and pay it directly, ideally in cash in dirhams.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the trip, with a full refund. Later cancellations and no-shows are not refunded. If weather or river conditions make the valley unsafe on your date, we propose another date or give you a full refund. The full rules are in our terms and conditions.

Is the Ourika Valley worth a day trip?

If you want a break from the heat and noise of Marrakech, yes. In one day you see Berber villages and farming life, learn how argan oil is made, walk in a real mountain gorge and eat by the river. If you want high mountain scenery and long hikes, consider a trek or a longer stay.

Is a guide included for the waterfalls walk?

No, the local guide is an option you add when you book: 40 EUR per group for 1 to 7 people, 80 EUR per group for 8 to 17 people. He meets you at Setti Fatma and walks with you to the falls. The path is rocky with some scrambling, so we recommend a guide for a first visit, with children, or to go beyond the first falls.

Can we add a camel ride?

Yes. A short camel ride can be added as an optional stop on the way to the valley. It is not included in the tour price and is paid on the spot. Mention it when you book, or ask your driver on the day, and we arrange it without changing the rest of the programme.
