- Marketplaces resell tours run by third-party local suppliers
- Trade press puts platform commission at about 20% to 30% of the price
- Direct booking: you talk to the people who drive you
- Our cancellation is free up to 7 days before, stricter than many marketplace listings
- A checklist to vet any operator, wherever you book
GetYourGuide and Viator are large, legitimate booking marketplaces, and many travellers have good days with tours bought there. But neither company runs an Ourika Valley trip itself: each listing is operated by a third-party local supplier, and the platform keeps a commission on the booking, which the trade publication Arival put in 2025 at 27% for Viator's basic rate and at 20% rising to 30% for some GetYourGuide suppliers. For a simple day out about 65 km from Marrakech, that extra layer adds little, and it can get in the way when something goes wrong on the morning of the trip. Booking direct with a local operator means you talk to the people who actually drive you, the trip you book is the trip you get, and the whole price stays with the people who do the work. With us, the private day trip costs 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, and the shared excursion 25 EUR per person with lunch.
We are a local operator, so we have an interest here, and we prefer to say so. That is why every statement about the platforms below is linked to a source.
How do GetYourGuide and Viator actually work?
Both are marketplaces, not tour operators. GetYourGuide presents itself to operators as an online marketplace for tours, activities and attractions: listing an activity costs nothing, and the supplier pays a commission on each successful booking. Viator belongs to Tripadvisor, whose annual report describes nearly 400,000 experiences from more than 65,000 operators, with revenue coming from a commission on each booking.
How much is that commission? GetYourGuide does not publish one figure: its supplier page says rates vary with the country of operation. The trade publication Arival reported in 2025 that some GetYourGuide suppliers saw their rate go from 20% to 30%, and that Viator's basic commission rate is 27%. In plain terms, on those figures, between a fifth and nearly a third of what you pay on these sites does not reach the people who drive, guide and cook.
Two more things follow from the model. First, an operator can sell the same departure on many sites at once: booking software such as Bókun publishes a tour on dozens of resellers with one shared calendar, so the travellers in a shared vehicle may have booked in different places. Second, on the day itself, the people who know where the van is work for the supplier. GetYourGuide told its suppliers that travellers now see their guide's contact details in the app one hour before the activity, because finding the right person at a meeting point can be a moment of uncertainty.
What the platforms do well
The marketplaces do several things well, and it would be dishonest to hide it:
- Reviews in one place. You can read what recent travellers say about a listing, bad days included. The reviews we describe below were labelled as verified bookings.
- Flexible cancellation. GetYourGuide states that most bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before, and Viator's standard policy, which covers the vast majority of its products, gives a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. That is more flexible than our terms.
- A known company takes the payment. You pay an international platform by card, and both offer a "reserve now, pay later" option. GetYourGuide also advertises customer service around the clock.
- Choice and speed. One app covers hundreds of thousands of activities in many cities, which is handy when you book at the last minute in a place where you know nobody.
What do verified reviews of one Ourika listing describe?
We read the one-star reviews left between March and June 2024 on a GetYourGuide listing for an Ourika Valley day trip sold by another operator. We do not name the operator, and we paraphrase instead of quoting.
- A pickup that never came on time. In May 2024, a traveller from the United Kingdom explains that the pickup was announced for 8:40, that the van did not arrive, and that they waited an hour and a half with two other travellers while the person coordinating pickups did not answer calls or give any news. The same traveller adds that the valley itself was beautiful once they got there.
- The wrong pickup place. In June 2024, another UK traveller reports that the driver did not come to the correct location.
- A different valley. In April 2024, two French travellers write that they had booked an excursion to Ourika and that the organiser changed the destination to Imlil without telling them beforehand.
- Several other one-star ratings without text appear on the same listing in the same weeks.
These reviews concern one listing and one operator. They are not a verdict on every tour sold on GetYourGuide or Viator, and we did not survey that listing's positive reviews. They simply show three ways a resold day trip can fail: the pickup, the destination and the lack of a person to talk to.

Why is booking direct better for the Ourika Valley?
1. Pickup: you deal with the people who drive you
On our private Ourika Valley day trip, we pick you up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. If your riad is inside the medina, where cars cannot enter most lanes, we meet you at the nearest point a vehicle can reach, as close as possible to your door. The day before, your driver sends you a WhatsApp message to confirm the time and place. If anything is unclear that morning, you write to +212 661 454 738 and reach the team that sent the driver.
2. Destination: the trip you book is the trip you get
Ourika and Imlil are both lovely, but they are different days, as our comparison of Ourika, Ouzoud and Imlil explains. If weather or river conditions make the valley unsafe on your date, our terms are simple: we propose another date or a full refund. We do not swap to another valley without your agreement.
3. Price: no intermediary commission
Our prices are public and the same for everyone:
- Private day trip: 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR per vehicle for 8 to 17 people. Options at booking: lunch by the river at 20 EUR per person, and a local guide for the waterfalls walk at 40 EUR per group (1 to 7 people) or 80 EUR per group (8 to 17 people).
- Shared excursion: 25 EUR per person, lunch and return transport from Marrakech included.
- Private transport and the cooperatives and villages tour: 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people, 200 EUR for 8 to 17 people.
- Packages: Ourika with a camel ride or with quad at the same vehicle price plus 15 or 30 EUR per person; trek and lunch with a Berber family at 60 EUR per person; Ourika and Oukaïmeden at 180 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people.
We do not quote marketplace prices here, because they change. Compare for yourself, like with like: private or shared, lunch and guide included or not.
4. The money stays local
When you book direct, no platform commission is taken out of the price: it pays the driver, the vehicle, the restaurant and the guide, people who are from the valley or work in it every day. Our guide to responsible travel in the Ourika Valley explains why that matters here.
5. Your questions are answered by people who know the valley
Is the river high this week? Can a small child manage the walk to the first waterfall? We answer ourselves, and sometimes the honest answer is another product: a half day for early risers, or a private transfer if you only need a car and driver. The most common questions are in our FAQ.
Marketplace or direct: side by side
| Criterion | Marketplace (GetYourGuide, Viator) | Booking direct with us |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the trip | A third-party supplier chosen from the listing | Our own drivers and local guides |
| Who you contact on the day | The supplier, with platform customer service as a backup | Our team, on WhatsApp |
| Commission in the price | About 20% to 30% according to trade press | None |
| Who shares the vehicle | On shared tours, travellers who may have booked on different sites | Private trip: only your group. Shared excursion: other travellers, and we say so |
| Free cancellation | Up to 24 hours before on most listings | Up to 7 days before |
| If the valley is unsafe | Depends on the supplier and the platform's rules | Another date or a full refund |
| Choice | Many activities in many cities | The Ourika Valley only |
How to check any operator before you book
Wherever you book, ask these five questions in writing, so the answers are on your phone:
- Who actually runs the tour? The company whose driver will come, not only the site.
- What is the exact pickup point and time? Inside the medina, "at your riad" is rarely possible by car.
- Is there a WhatsApp number that answers? Send a message before you pay and see who replies.
- What happens if the valley is closed or unsafe? A new date, a refund, or another destination? You should decide, not find out in the van.
- Private or shared, and how many people? A private vehicle and a seat in a minibus are different products.
The honest limits of booking direct with us
- We are a small team. We answer messages ourselves, usually within a few hours, not around the clock.
- We only operate in the Ourika Valley. For other regions, you will need someone else.
- Payment goes through PayPal, with a PayPal account or a bank card, at booking.
- Our cancellation is stricter. It is free up to 7 days before the trip; many marketplace listings allow 24 hours. If your dates may still move, tell us before you book.
If that suits you, choose your date on our booking page, or write to us first.

Frequently asked questions
Is GetYourGuide or Viator reliable for an Ourika Valley trip?
Both are legitimate, well-known marketplaces, and many travellers have a good day with tours bought there. The quality of your day depends on the local supplier behind the listing, not on the platform. Read the recent reviews of that exact listing, look for comments about pickup, and check who operates the tour before you pay.
Is it cheaper to book the Ourika Valley direct?
We cannot promise that our price beats every listing, because marketplace prices change and we do not track them. What we can say is that our price contains no intermediary commission: 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people on the private day trip, 200 EUR for 8 to 17, and 25 EUR per person on the shared excursion with lunch.
Who do I call if the driver is late?
With us, you write or call on WhatsApp at +212 661 454 738 and you reach the team that sent the driver. On a marketplace booking, the people who know where the vehicle is work for the local supplier, so look for the supplier's phone number in your voucher or app before the day, and keep the platform's customer service as a second step.
Can a tour be changed from Ourika to Imlil?
Some verified reviews of one marketplace listing describe exactly that, without warning. With us, the trip you book is the trip you get. If weather or river conditions make the Ourika Valley unsafe, we propose another date or a full refund. We do not take you to another valley unless you have agreed to it.
How do I pay when booking direct?
You pay online at booking, through PayPal with a PayPal account or with a bank card via PayPal, and you receive a confirmation email at once. This applies to the private day trip, the shared excursion, private transport, the packages and the cooperatives tour. Four offers, such as the half day, are booked by request and confirmed by email or WhatsApp.
What is your cancellation policy compared with the platforms?
Ours is stricter. Cancellation with us is free up to 7 days before the trip, with a full refund; later cancellations and no-shows are not refunded. Many GetYourGuide and Viator listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If your plans in Marrakech are still uncertain, that flexibility is a real advantage of the platforms.
How can I check a tour operator before booking?
Ask five things in writing: who actually runs the tour, the exact pickup point and time, a WhatsApp number that answers, what happens if the valley is closed, and whether the tour is private or shared and how large the group can be. A serious operator answers all five without hesitation.
