Atlas Mountains day trip from Marrakech: how far, which valley and what it costs

The High Atlas starts about 40 km south of Marrakech, and five places can be reached on a day trip: the Ourika Valley, Imlil, Asni, Ouirgane and Oukaïmeden, between 50 minutes and 1 hour 40 by road. The Ourika Valley is the closest and the easiest with children. Our private day trip costs 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people.

An Atlas Mountains day trip from Marrakech means a day in one of the valleys of the High Atlas, the range that closes the horizon south of the city. The first slopes are about 40 km away. Five places can be reached and enjoyed in a day: the Ourika Valley (about 38 km and 50 minutes to Tnine Ourika, 63 km to Setti Fatma), Asni (about 49 km, 1 hour), Ouirgane (about 63 km, 1 hour 15), Imlil (about 65 km, 1 hour 30) and the Oukaïmeden plateau (about 78 km, 1 hour 40). The Ourika Valley is the closest and the most varied for a mixed group: Berber villages, a river, cooperatives and the walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. Imlil is the choice of hikers, below Jebel Toubkal, 4,167 m, the highest peak in North Africa. Our private Ourika day trip costs 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people.

We live and work in one of these valleys, the Ourika, and we drive to it from Marrakech every day. Travellers often ask us about "the Atlas" as if it were one place. It is a range several hundred kilometres long, and from Marrakech you choose one valley for the day. Here is how to choose.

How far are the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech?

Close enough to see them from the rooftops on a clear day. These are our own measurements by road from Jemaa el-Fna, on OpenStreetMap data, without stops:

Destination Distance by road Driving time Altitude
Tnine Ourika (entrance of the Ourika Valley) About 38 km About 50 minutes Lower valley
Asni About 49 km About 1 hour Foothills
Setti Fatma (end of the Ourika road) About 63 km About 1 hour to 1 hour 30 About 1,500 m
Ouirgane About 63 km About 1 hour 15 Foothills
Imlil About 65 km About 1 hour 30 About 1,740 to 1,800 m
Oukaïmeden About 78 km About 1 hour 40 2,600 m and above

Traffic leaving Marrakech and the bends of the mountain roads add time, especially at weekends.

Which Atlas valley should you choose for a day?

The Ourika Valley

The closest valley and the one with the most to do without a long walk: earth-built Berber villages, a women's argan oil cooperative, restaurants with tables by the river, and at the end of the road Setti Fatma and its seven waterfalls. It is our valley, and our private day trip covers it at your pace. It is busy at weekends in summer, when families from Marrakech come for the cool air.

Imlil and the Toubkal massif

Imlil, at about 1,740 to 1,800 m, is the base for Jebel Toubkal, 4,167 m. Choose it if walking is the point of your day: real mountain paths and big scenery. It is less suited to a mixed group that wants variety. Our comparison of Ourika, Ouzoud and Imlil goes into detail.

Oukaïmeden

A high plateau and ski resort above the Ourika Valley, reached by a road that branches off at Aghbalou. In winter people come for the snow; the rest of the year for the cool air and the rock engravings. Our guide to Oukaïmeden explains the snow season and the state of the ski lifts, and our Ourika + Oukaïmeden day combines both.

Asni and Ouirgane

Two quiet places in the foothills on the road to the Tizi n'Test. Asni is known for its Saturday souk; Ouirgane for its calm valley. We do not run a regular day there; ask us if you want a private vehicle.

When is the best time for the Atlas Mountains?

Spring, from March to May, is the best season: water in the rivers and the waterfalls, green terraces, snow still on the summits. Autumn is calm and clear. Summer is the time to escape the heat of Marrakech, with an early start, because storms build in the afternoon. In winter the valleys are cold and bright, and the snow reaches Oukaïmeden. Our Ourika Valley weather page has a live seven-day forecast for Setti Fatma, Tnine Ourika and Oukaïmeden.

Is it safe, and what about storms?

The roads to these valleys are ordinary mountain roads, driven every day. The real risk is the weather: after a storm, a river can rise fast and bring mud and stones onto the road, as happened in the Ourika Valley in October 2026. That is why we check the alerts the evening before and the road in the morning, leave early, and offer another date or a full refund if a valley is not safe.

How do you get to the Atlas without a tour?

By grand taxi, by rental car or with a private driver. Our page on getting to the Ourika Valley compares these options, and our map of the valley shows the road from Marrakech to Setti Fatma and the branch to Oukaïmeden.

Frequently asked questions

How far are the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech?

The first slopes of the High Atlas are about 40 km south of the city. By road from Jemaa el-Fna we measure about 38 km and 50 minutes to Tnine Ourika, at the entrance of the Ourika Valley, about 49 km and 1 hour to Asni, about 63 km to Setti Fatma or Ouirgane, about 65 km and 1 hour 30 to Imlil, and about 78 km and 1 hour 40 to Oukaïmeden.

Is the Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains?

Yes. The Ourika Valley is a valley of the High Atlas, in Al Haouz province. It starts at Tnine Ourika and climbs along the Ourika river to Setti Fatma, at about 1,500 m, under peaks that carry snow in winter and spring.

Can you see the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech?

Yes, on clear days. The range closes the horizon south of the city, and from late autumn to spring the summits are often white with snow. Summer haze hides them on many days.

Which Atlas valley is best for a day trip?

The Ourika Valley if you want villages, a river, a cooperative and a short walk to a waterfall, with the shortest drive. Imlil if hiking is the point of the day. Oukaïmeden for snow in winter and wide views. Ouirgane and Asni for quiet scenery away from the crowds.

How much does an Atlas Mountains day trip cost?

With us, a private day in the Ourika Valley costs 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 200 EUR for 8 to 17, and the Ourika + Oukaïmeden day costs 180 EUR and 260 EUR. The shared excursion costs 25 EUR per person with lunch and return transport. All are paid online.

Is one day enough for the Atlas Mountains?

One day is enough to see one valley properly: the drive, the villages, a walk and lunch. It is not enough for a trek to a summit. If you have half a day, the Ourika Valley is the only one that fits.

What should you wear for a day in the Atlas?

Closed shoes with grip, a warm layer even in summer because the valleys are cooler than Marrakech, sun protection, and modest clothing in the villages. In winter, a real jacket: it can freeze at night above 1,500 m.
