The day trips from Marrakech fall into three rings around the city. The first ring, under an hour away, is the Agafay stone desert and Lalla Takerkoust lake, about 35 km from Jemaa el-Fna. The second ring is the High Atlas: the Ourika Valley, Imlil and Ouirgane, about 63 to 65 km away and 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 by road, and the Oukaïmeden plateau, about 78 km and 1 hour 40. The third ring is the long days: Ouzoud Falls, about 160 km and 3 hours, Aït Ben Haddou over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, about 170 km and 3 hours 20, and Essaouira on the Atlantic, about 183 km and 2 hours 40. These are our own measurements by road, without stops. The closer the trip, the more of the day you spend there. We run private days to the Ourika Valley, alone or combined with Agafay or Oukaïmeden, from 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people.
We drive out of Marrakech every morning, and the question we hear before every booking is the same: which day is right for us? Here is our honest comparison, including the trips we do not run ourselves.

Which day trip should you choose?
| If you want | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mountains and villages, little driving | Ourika Valley | The closest High Atlas valley, with the most to see without a long walk |
| A desert landscape near the city | Agafay | Under an hour away; dramatic at sunset |
| Real hiking | Imlil | Mountain paths in the Toubkal massif |
| Snow | Oukaïmeden | Snow mostly from January to March, depending on the year |
| A big waterfall | Ouzoud | Much higher than the Setti Fatma falls, but 3 hours away |
| The ocean | Essaouira | The coast and a walled medina |
| A famous kasbah | Aït Ben Haddou | Spectacular, but nearly 7 hours of driving in the day |
Our comparison of Ourika, Ouzoud and Imlil goes into detail on the three most asked about, and our guide to an Atlas Mountains day trip compares the mountain valleys.

The first ring: under an hour
The Agafay desert is a stone desert of bare, rounded hills south-west of the city, with the Atlas behind on a clear day. It is not a sand desert, but its sunsets and its camps make it the most popular short trip from Marrakech. Lalla Takerkoust is a reservoir lake on the same side, a calm stop with the mountains behind. Both fit in half a day. Our sister site Visit Agafay Desert covers the desert in detail.
The second ring: the High Atlas
The Ourika Valley is our valley: Berber villages of earth and stone, a river lined with orchards, women's argan cooperatives, potters, and at the end of the road Setti Fatma with its river restaurants and waterfalls. It is the closest mountain day and the easiest with mixed groups. Imlil is the base for Jebel Toubkal and the choice of hikers. Ouirgane is a quieter valley in the foothills. Oukaïmeden, above the Ourika Valley, is the place for snow in winter; our Oukaïmeden guide explains when.
The third ring: the long days
Ouzoud has the highest waterfall of the region, about 110 m in several drops, at the edge of the Middle Atlas. Essaouira is the Atlantic town with a walled medina and a fishing port. Aït Ben Haddou is the ksar beyond the Tizi n'Tichka pass. All three are 160 to 185 km away: about 5 to 7 hours of driving in the day. They are worth it, but they are better with a night on the way or as part of a longer trip. We do not run these three days ourselves.
Can you combine two trips in one day?

Practical tips for any day trip
- Leave early. Mornings are cooler, the light is better and you beat the traffic leaving the city.
- Count the hours in the car. A day with more than 5 hours of driving is a long day, whatever the destination.
- Check the weather. In the mountains, summer storms form in the afternoon; in winter, roads to the high places can close after snow. Our Ourika Valley weather page has a live forecast.
- Carry cash in dirhams. Card payment is rare outside the city.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best day trip from Marrakech?
It depends on what you want and how long you want to sit in a car. For mountains, villages and a river with the shortest drive, the Ourika Valley. For a desert landscape close to the city, Agafay. For hiking, Imlil. For the ocean, Essaouira. For a big waterfall, Ouzoud. For a kasbah, Aït Ben Haddou, but that is nearly 7 hours of driving in the day.
Which day trips from Marrakech are less than an hour away?
The Agafay desert and Lalla Takerkoust lake, about 35 km from Jemaa el-Fna, are under an hour by road. Tnine Ourika, at the entrance of the Ourika Valley, is about 50 minutes away.
Is Aït Ben Haddou possible as a day trip from Marrakech?
Yes, but it is long: about 170 km each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which we measure at about 3 hours 20 without stops. That is nearly 7 hours of driving in one day. If you can, spend a night on the way.
Can you combine two day trips in one day?
Yes, when they are on the same side of the city. We run the Ourika Valley and the Agafay desert in one day, and the Ourika Valley and Oukaïmeden in one day, each at 180 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people.
How much does a private day trip from Marrakech cost?
With us, a private day in the Ourika Valley costs 120 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 200 EUR for 8 to 17, with pickup and drop-off at your hotel or riad. The price is per vehicle, not per person.
Which day trip is best with children?
The shortest ones. The Ourika Valley, Agafay and Lalla Takerkoust keep the drive under 1 hour 30 and offer things children enjoy: a river, a camel ride, open space. The long days to Ouzoud, Essaouira or Aït Ben Haddou are hard with young children.
